Representation of Sexuality

Watch the following clip from Sherlock 4 times through. Make notes on what representation of SEXUALITY you are being shown and how sound, camera, mise-en-scene and editing helps to construct this.

  1. In the clip Irene Adler uses sexuality to try and over power sherlock. At the start of the clip she removes her clothes and this clearly shocks sherlock. She takes off his collar from his vicars collar disguise and puts it in-between her teeth. This is her showing him that she has control over him, almost like a power game. It would not be relevant if she wasn't naked but because she is it leaves him startled and confused. Secondly some over the shoulder shots are used to express her sexuality because you can almost see her from sherlocks view, over powering him. This shows that he is not in control, and he clearly is in some distress over this. Lastly she removes her high heels after putting on sherlocks coat, as if to still try and look seductive towards sherlock, trying to entice information out of him. This is typical of the stereotype of a woman trying to use sexuality to get what she wants.

    1. More evidence rooted in the micro-elements in required - there is more commentary on the narrative than the use of micro-elements. You have mentioned 'over the shoulder shots' but this is a little vague and the link to how this helps offer a representation of sexuality is unclear. Consider my example paragraphs more carefully and try to emulate this style more closely.

  2. In the clip when Sherklock meets the naked irene Adler, we can wee that the women, Irene, uses her sexuality to manipulate the two men. this is a stereotype of women as they are sometimes viewed as using sexuality to manipulate. Irene is wearing bright red lipstick which shows aggression and she also uses a sexual voice which is diegtic sound. We can see that when she walks in the cameras tracks her move. Irene is not ashamed about her body. Irene has the most screen time in this clip which shows that she has power. Towards the end of the clip Sherlock fights for power and domains as the screen time starts to equally out in a shot-revsere-shot edit. there is a zoom in on Johns face and fail expression when he walks in the room and see Irene. At the end of this clip, a high angle is shown which looks up at sherlock. This shows him at having power.

    1. Much better. However, there are some errors in your technical language (e.g. no zooms are used in the clip other than in the freeze frame section and I think you mean 'low angle' when you say 'high angle').

  3. In this clip, we see a women standing in front of two men stark naked. This is shows she is confident and is trying to obtain dominance. The woman's sexuality is representing her as being a sex object. Throughout the extract, multiple close ups have been used so show her feminine features. These are thing such as her makeup (red lipstick), her hair and her skin. The red lipstick would represent danger and mystery. Irene also has a very soft but aggressive voice when speaking to the men showing she is using her sexuality to seduce the male characters. Moreover, Irene has the most screen time out of the three characters showing her dominance and her importance.

    1. A little brief but you are starting to improve your writing style. Use technical language such as 'mise en scene' to really signal the elements you are investigating and using as evidence - e.g. Mise en scene is used to help communicate Irene's dominant sexuality. For example, her red lipstick...

  4. In this clip, the female character is shown to use her sexuality to manipulate sherlock. There are many subtle hints using mis en scene to represent a very typically stereotyped women such as the heavy makeup with the smoky eyes, red lipstick is also warn representing danger and love subtly warning the audience of her intentions. The fist shot we see of her is a behind mid shot of her body, here she is taking up the majority of the screen showing her Dominance over sherlock; something she should not have much of in a normal situation with her in clothes. This shot also shows sherlock and his facial expressions of true shock with her outfit choice of just boots in the corner of the screen. This shot then moves into the conversation between the 2 meeting. A low mid shot is used from behind sherlock facing upwards showing her looking down on him, gain showing the dominance she has due to this uncomfortable situation.

    1. Whilst you have pinpointed some specific examples, your initial point shifts from Irene using sexuality to manipulate to Irene being represented as sexually dominant. Whilst these are two valid points, your writing would be clearer if you explored those points one at a time.

  5. In this clip of Sherlock, Irene Adler is presented as the dominant party in this situation. In an over the shoulder shot from Sherlock's point of view, Irene is shown with a high angle, which makes her dominance apparent, as she uses her overt sexuality to manipulate the situation. This conforms to stereotypes of women using mens' sexual attraction to hold power over them, however, it is usually far more subtle. Irene's dominance is also shown in muse-en-scene. When she sits on the sofa, she is reclined and comfortable, but when both Sherlock and John sit down, their body language is tense and upright, clearly displaying their discomfort and lack of dominance. At the start of the clip, non-diegetic music plays when Irene enters the room. It sounds very serious and heavy, representing the noticeable shift in the atmosphere, felt by Sherlock who felt read to be dominant, only to react as a stereotypical heterosexual male, weak to the power of a sexually attractive female.

    1. Good work - clear and supported with precise evidence. Ensure you are not mixing up low angles with high angles (low angle means the camera is looking up and high angle means its looking down).

  6. In the clip we see sexuality portrayed in the common way of a women using her sexuality to manipulate and use it to her power. we see this in the use of diegetic sound when she walks in, we hear her footsteps which suggests a sense of dominance as she comes through the doors. We see Shot reverse shot used to show the shocked expression on Sherlocks face as the naked women wearing only high heels walks in, we don't see one person that dominates the screen time however they both fight for power and dominance. The use of mise-en-scene and what the character is wearing, only high heels, shows to use she is using her sexuality to gain power, as the high heels is worn to show off her body and make her more attractive. Slightly into the clip we see the editing and the cuts pick up in pace, this shows the chaos on scene as one of the characters tries to dominate the screen time, eventually comes out as the female character that takes up the most screen time, this shows her dominance over the two male characters as she is on the screen the most. We get a glimpse of the power she displays through the use of camera and framing, where we see the female character dominates the frame (takes up two thirds of the screen) and we see Sherlock looking up to her. We also see this in another form as Sherlock looks up to her, a low to high shot is used to display her dominance over him as she towers over him and makes him look vulnerable and week

    1. Much better - good exploration of the micro-elements. Beware of statements like 'the characters try to dominate the screen time'. Characters are unaware of the fact they are on TV so cannot struggle for screen time. This is an editing decision the program makers have made (not the characters).

  7. The character of Irene is given a very sexual representation in the clip from Sherlock. This is not an uncommon stereotype of a heterosexual woman; they are often depicted as using their physical assets to manipulate male characters through sexual means. Irene is naked in the scene, which is perhaps the most obvious decision made by producers to sexualise and objectify her, however there have also been decisions used in her make up. She wears a deep red lipstick and smoky eye style, which both convey feelings of sexual darkness. Her hair is dark and styled on top of her head, further expanding on this idea that Irene is knowingly using her looks and sexuality to dominate the two men in the scene and achieve her end goal. A use of sound identifies Sherlock's discomfort at her naked entry to the room; when his eyes meet her, a deep undertone of music begins to play. This deep, sudden note could reflect his inner thoughts; her entry has shocked and confused him, and therefore his mind has been temporarily taken over and he is trying to make sense of the situation and regain control. At this moment, camera is also used to establish Irene's effect on Sherlock; the camera zooms in on Sherlock's facial expression and specifically eyes as Irene enters, n=making it clear to an audience that he has been thrown off balance by her nudity and manipulative use of her sexuality. We see that he struggles to understand her meaning or purpose, and also halts his speech mid- sentence, presumably because he is stunned by her appearance and temporarily fails to remain powerful.

    1. Good - plenty of evidence of how micro-elements construct meaning. Ensure you are making clear links back to the area of study (in this case 'sexuality').

  8. In the clip of Sherlock, Irene is presented as a dominant character, using her sexuality to manipulate the male characters. A high angle is used to portray this, as Sherlock is below her which can make the audience question his power. She is also wearing red lipstick and has red painted nails, the colour red

  9. From this clip Irene Adler uses her sexuality to manipulate the men in the scene. Irene's dominance is shown with the amount of screen time that she has as we can clearly see that she is fighting for dominance with sherlock and wants to come out on top. Her make up in the scene shows that she can be quite a dangerous character (with the colour red being her lip stick). We then also see that there is hardly any ornaments in the scene which makes it hard for Sherlock to read read her as he is able to read John. When he is trying to read Irene we see that Sherlock is having difficulties and the sound of wind is heard which can suggest that it is just going straight over his head and is finding it difficult. Towards the end of the scene we see Sherlock stumble with his words which can show that he is flustered and uncomfortable with the use of her aggressive sexuality.

    1. The very start and very end of your paragraph deals with the representation of sexuality but the middle doesn't! I think I can see the points you are trying to make but you need to make clearer links to the focus of the question.

  10. In this extract the representation of women in the scene may subvert our expectations of normal women. In the first scene Irene can be seen walking into the shot from behind sherlocks head, this shot is to show that sherlock has recognised the fact that she is now in the room. This shot is important because it gives the first glimpse at irene who is standing naked. The next shot is a zoom close up which shows us the reaction of sherlock. Sherlocks facial expressions subvert the generic expectation of sherlock because he is shocked confused showing that he is submissive to her which subverts our expectation of men being the dominant.

  11. In this clip Irene's character uses her sexuality as a tool to get information from Sherlock and John. Irene walks into the room with no clothes on and very sexual make up which includes red lipstick which has the connotation of danger and has dark eyeshadow which emphasises the fact that she is mysterious. When she walks in you can see that her using her sexuality helps her to gain dominance as not only does she have more screen time but she also has the camera following her when she walks into the room. Irene also uses her voice to as a tool as she speaks in a slow sexual tone to try and seek out information. Sherlocks character is uncomfortable throughout out this scene you can see this when Irene walks into the room and there is a close up/zoom of Sherlocks face showing confusion and him being uncomfortable. While the two are having a conversation Sherlocks voice tries to show no emotion but it is quite clear that he is uncomfortable as you can see him playing with his top button but the shot reverse shot used shows that he is gaining back some of the dominance. Towards the end of the scene you can hear him stutter which is unusual for Sherlock which also shows that he is uncomfortable.

  12. In this clip of Sherlock we see a woman using the power of her sexuality to lure the male characters through manipulation. A female using her sexuality conforms to a typical representation of a female character. However this reputation is subverted by the way power and dominance over the men is shown by the use of sound as she walks into the room. An single instrument with string is used, only a few strings are individualy played, one at a time. This could imply how she has knocked him off guard with her sexuality and therefore has successfully dominated Sherlock. One other way her sexuality is represented is through the use of Mise en scene,in which she has both red lipstick and red nails. The colour red suggests ideas of sex and danger, which makes her seem as if an object for men. Through the use of a high angle shot she is shown to be standing above him as he looks up to her, representing how she has more dominance. Subverting to typical representations of females.

  13. Following the typical stereotype in sexuality, the male is the dominant figure. However in this clip Irene is challenging sherlocks dominance, using her body and the fat that she is naked.
One way she does this is through her positioning and the way she is conversing with sherlock. On several occasions Sherlock finds himself below Irene, as she towers above him, looking down on him. Sherlock is sat straight up, appearing to be very tense. This shows he is uncomfortable with Irene bering narked Irene is stood tall and confident, not at all embarrassed about being unclothed. The fact Sherlock would usually be the dominant figure in this situation shows how Irene is using her body and the the way she stands above him to ensure he knows she is in charge.
Another way Irene fights the dominance stereotype is with eye contact. The camera movement is clever as t creates eye line match. When Sherlock and Irene glare at each other he appeasers to be twitching, on the other hand Irene remains sturdy and rigid when looking in to sherlocks eyes. This suggests she is controlling him and making him feel uneasy.
It is evident that sherlock tries to fight her dominance. For example when he stands up and rushes around the room, looking to escape her rap. However the muttering of his words once again shows that he is flustered.

  14. In the clip of Sherlock we see A woman, Irene, who is very blatant with her comfort of using her body to manipulate what she wants out of somebody. Both Sherlock and Watson are shown to be very uncomfortable by this. Before Irene enters the room we see a mid shot of sherlock sat in the room by himself but as he hears Irene's voice he immediately moves his hand up to nurse is wound. This subverts the stereotype of a heterosexual male as rather than masking his pain, he is showing a weakness, suggesting that he is possibly attempting gain sympathy from Irene to get what he wants as opposed to asserting his dominance. As Irene walks into the room the camera zooms in on Sherlock's facial expression which shows his shock and discomfort from the fact that she is naked. A shot reverse shot is then used to show Irene's face, she is smirking allowing us to believe her intention was to catch Sherlock of guard. Deep music begins to play as Sherlock lays his eyes on Irene which could suggest his Discomfort with the situation. Later on in the scene Sherlock also stutters on his words which emphasises his nerves.

  16. In this clip of Sherlock, we see Irene Adler using her sexuality aggressively to gain influence over the two men. They're in a bright room to suggest it's pleasurable for sex. The lighting of the room is aimed at Irene's face and body to emphasise her sexual attraction; here we see heavy make-up as Irene comes across as a sexual predator. The lighting on her body makes her figure and assets well- defined , particularly for male audiences to be lured by, known as the male gaze theory. Furthermore, the room is luxurious with crystallised lamps; cream and big sofas; tall and large curtains; and carpeted floors. The audience would immediately grasp that she's a wealthy woman with easy gain of power and sex. This is shown by her screen time because she has more than Sherlock does because of her irresistible sexuality. However, this is challenged at the same time time by Sherlock and Irene having shot cuts between each other; this implies that both of them are trying to dominate the room; Irene does gain the upper hand because she's more assertive by body language and proximity which throws off Sherlock as usually women use their sexuality subtly.

  19. In the clip of 'Sherlock' Irene Adler is clearly utilising her sexuality to manipulate the two men in the clip, particularly Sherlock. This representation of Adler is not an unusual, but what is uncommon is the power and dominance that she demands through her sexuality. The men's reaction to Irene's apparent display of sexuality is stereotypical- they are made to feel awkward and are flustered by it. For example, concerning camera work and mise en scene, there is a clear high angle and midshot, so the audience can see Irene's red lips, smoky eyeshadow and sexually aggressive expression while talking to Sherlock, where he is below her. This highlights Irene's promiscuous personality, and her comfort in her sexuality- therefore being able to dominate the men.

Looking at editing, there is an eyeline match during the shot reverse shot of Irene and Sherlock's conversation, she looks directly into his eyes- this suggests that there is consistent clear female domination, where she is challenging Sherlock. This is further suggested through the use of non-diegetic sound, it is also clear to see how Sherlock is trying to conceal his embarrassment of Irene's naked body by the dramatic, deep music played when he first sets eyes on her, implying he is being challenged by her.
