  1. In the clip, we are presented with a homosexual male criminal. The stereotype of gay males being flamboyant and feminine is immediately subverted through his use of dialogue and body language. The way that he speaks to the female character, Alex, is quite intimidating and therefore something we would stereotypically expect from a heterosexual male character. Diegetic sound is modified in this scene in order to create a tense and isolated atmosphere, the music within the club is turned down for effect so that the man’s voice is clear.

It is clear that the heterosexual male characters in the clip have very little understanding of the lives and interests of homosexual males. When the detective suggests that one man pretends to be gay and interested in the criminal, he replies with the dialogue ‘What do I say? What do I do?’. He genuinely has no idea how to act as a homosexual, and this suggests that he has perhaps distanced himself from the community/idea of it throughout his life. This idea of disliking what you don’t understand is commonplace within the heterosexual community, and many view gay people as being alien to them and a group they don’t wish to associate themselves with.

The stereotype of gay males drifting between partners is clearly shown throughout the clip, the main criminal is shown to be interested in two men in the same evening, seducing another the minute that the first gets up and leaves.

Alex, the heterosexual woman is dressed up in low cut and eye catching clothing, obviously with the intention of leading the criminal on. This sexuality and attractive nature is commonly shown in heterosexual females in media, and they are often seen as objects belonging to the males in question.
